A clean slate: The promise of a new year
Don't you just love the promise of the near year and the pages of a clean, unblemished calendar? A new year is fills me with anticipation of what can be accomplished.
Since the difference between a dream and a goal is a plan...now is the time to begin planning for the great expanse of 52 weeks 2011 will bless you with.
What do you want to accomplish in 2011?
Is it being healthier, getting more exercise, losing that pesky 10 pounds gained over the holidays...
Perhaps your finances need shoring up, or you want to save for a major purchase
Do you want to spend learning a new skill or improve an existing one or perhaps you need to learn a new language for that vacation you'll be taking in the fall?
Does your basement, attic or closet need purging? Drawers need organizing?
Do you need to let go of a grudge, heal a relationship or start a new one?
Any bad habits that need to be gotten rid of? Any new habits you want to develop?
You can do it...all you need is a plan to turn that dream into a GOAL
The new year looms and each week gives you an opportunity to start fresh. Begin today by THINKING of what you want 2011 to be. Take 7 minutes this week (one minute each day) and WRITE down what you hope to accomplish this next year. We'll work the plan together in 2011!

TOO busy to Blog
Well, sorry for my inactivity these past several months
I have been too Busy to Blog but I promise to be faithful in the new year
Here are just a few of the things I plan on tackling the first few weeks of the near year:
As a craft connoisseur-I love trying our new crafts and therefore, I have a plethora of items in my basement just waiting to be made up (Think of the money warehoused there). SO no more money spent and dedicated to finishing up projects
which will lead t the next post
Completing what I started: Goal-Complete 2009 and 2010 scrapbooks by March 2011 (and this will include my work files)
Prayer Journal-ing and scripture memorization
Learn to Crochet
Simplify: find 10 things I can do easier
Improved speech patterns (yes, again)
I welcome your suggestions on how you'll use the 52 weeks 2011 gives you and how you'll use them to better your life, your family and the world!

18-Do Nothing

I am feeling overwhelmed with my to do list so this week's challenge is to do nothing! My week has the following items on the to do list
1)finish Kids Kloset consignment by 11:59pm Sunday (when the sites closes, so if it is not logged, it will not be available for the sale)
2) Craft remaining items for Haunted Hike on Friday, Oct 8-again if not made, they can't be sold
3) Clean DD room for impending arrival (dust)
4) Re-caulk bathroom tub (DH)
2 Physical Therapy appointments, a cardiology appointment, 3 Cross Country Practices, T3 supper, Early Release day on Wednesday an art fair and possibly a manicure with DD, pumpkins arrive at Church, a cross Country meet on Saturday and a church directory photo shoot
Plus the usual-WORK, prepare meals, laundry, housecleaning and I am not sure what else!
Now, I know it isn't practical and I will NOT actually DO Nothing...so perhaps the goal is to do less, do only that which needs doing.
I will delegate, exercise to reduce stress, read the scriptures, pray and let some things go undone!

17-Forgive
We recently became aware of the marital indiscretion between 2 families in our church. I was surprised by how hurt I felt by the choices these individuals had made and how far reaching the collateral damage was.
Our ladies bible study prayed for all the individuals directly impacted by the events, prayed a hedge of protection around our own marriages and then began the hard task of moving forward.
Here is an exercise we employed in our bible study which may work when you are in need of forgiveness or need to offer forgiveness.
This week I am working on forgiving...
Take a RED piece of paper
Write down what you need to be forgive for (or what you need to forgive another person for). If you re the person who required forgiveness, you must Own It. Without repentance there is no true forgiveness.
Place the paper in an envelope (preferably RED) and seal it. Place this in a prominent place where you can see it.
KNOW that Jesus blood (symbolized by the RED paper and envelope) has covered this sin and by His grace you are forgiven (or are able to forgive)
Every time you feel compelled to pick up your guilt or to cast accusations toward the one who harmed you-look at the RED envelope and remember CHRIST, through whom all things, even forgiveness, is possible!

16-Make a list
I am recovering from Shoulder surgery and am busier than ever with all the therapy sessions in addition to my regular schedule. It is overwhelming and I feel almost manic at times and my insomnia is back with a vengeance. Something has got to give!
I am going to make a list before I go to bed and see if that doesn't help me sleep better. I am also going to post a notepad beside the bed to jot down stray thoughts when the awaken me.
I have increased my prayer time during middle of the night wakefulness and will incorporate a meditation on "THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT AT THIS TIME OF THE NIGHT ANYWAY!" in order to relax.

15-Do good
Only I can make a difference.
My actions are a powerful force and I can use them to make the world a better place...or NOT!
This week I am going to seek out ways to make a REAL difference. Maybe it will be time spent in prayer, or giving a well placed hug of encouragement. Perhaps holding my tongue or speaking out may be the best way to make the world a better place this week. Maybe it will be in cleaning the break room, or picking up litter in the park. I can make a donation to a charity of my choice or buy lunch for the homeless man that lingers behind the parking lot.
Won't you join me in doing ONE THING each day to make your world a better place this week?

Toning the Abdominals
Edna Valentino is a Life Coach and an ACE-certified Personal Trainer. She understands that the power of weight loss comes from the power of the mind first, then the body. Not the other way around. You can reach her at www.AwakeningsLifeCoach.com. She also works at Robert's One on One Personal Training Studio, a private training facility in Malvern, PA. Visit the studio at www.RobertsOneonOne.com
Mixing up your routine and how you train is a great way to achieve tight abdominals. You can't train your muscles the same way day-in and day-out and expect new results. You need to keep those muscles guessing. You can either change the specific exercises with each workout, or you can keep the exercises the same while varying the intensity. The following are sure-fire ways to surprise your muscles so that you can develop the smaller, more toned mid-section you dreamt of that cold January day!
Tip #1. Vary the number of repetitions.
Instead of always doing three sets of 12-15 repetitions, on various days, do different numbers of reps. For example, for medicine ball twists, use a heavy medicine ball one day and do three sets of 15 reps. Two days later, use a lighter medicine ball and increase to three sets of 40 reps. This will confuse your muscles and force them to respond.
Tip #2. Switch up your speed.
Play with the speed at which you execute the exercise. You will notice how quickly you fatigue when doing super-slow bicycle crunches, for example. On the other hand, doing bicycle crunches super-fast will create a different point at which your muscles burn. And, if you really want a challenge, use both speeds in the same workout. For example, do the crunches fast for 10 reps, super-slow for 10, fast for 10, and again super-slow for 10. Now, how do those 40 repetitions feel compared to 40 repetitions done all at the same speed?
Tip #3. Squeeze at the top of every contraction.
You can really get more out of every exercise if you squeeze your muscles hard on the exertion. For example, when you are doing a basic crunch while lying on a stability ball, squeeze your abdominals hard at the top of the crunch every single time. You will no doubt feel a deep burn develop quickly, which is a clear indication that you are starting to chisel away that mid-section.
Tip #4. Alter the length of your rest periods.
Having variety in the duration of your rest periods will increase the intensity of your workouts. In one workout, rest just 10 seconds between sets. On another day, do the same exercise and rest 30 or 60 seconds between sets. The shorter rest periods result in greater intensity because your body doesn't get a chance to fully recover, while the longer rest periods allow for greater endurance. Mixing it up is important to keeping your muscles guessing!
Tip #5. Create a circuit.
Come up with five or so exercises or so regular exercises. Set them up so that you can go from one to the next without stopping. At the end of all five exercises, rest one minute and repeat. Next time, reverse the order of the exercises to keep the muscles confused.
You can see how easy it is to mix up what you are already doing without creating a new program. Remember that change is the key here, so don't get stuck doing the same old routine. Hit your muscles with different intensity levels and you should start seeing results. And don't forget that even if you are tightening those muscles from the inside, you won't get to see the results on the outside if you aren't eating well too. A healthy diet is an extremely important factor in revealing a beautifully toned mid-section. There is still a lot of summer left. Add these tips to your daily regimen, and by Labor Day you'll be closer to fulfilling that New Year's Resolution.

14-Time to get healthy

Back to school is THE perfect time to make a change in routine. Think 3rd quarter New Year Resolution...Therefore, I resolve to get back into an exercise routine (running, walking or group exercise class), start taking my vitamins and increasing my fiber intake. The goal-exercise 3 days a week, 25 grams of fiber daily and daily vitamins...
Since Cross Country practice is back in full swing I am going to embrace running again. I always felt such satisfaction after running with the kids--so, Yes this 52 year old is lacing up the running shoes and hitting the trail once again with North Oldham Middle school cross country team (as a parent runner/sweeper)
I haven't run since last October and since the heat index is over 100 here right now so I have been made well aware of just how out of shape I am. Middle schoolers are fast, even the slower ones and I can't really keep up but I know from experience that my speed and endurance will improve each and every time I practice.
Current weight is 118 and I am able to run about 1/2 a mile.

*!&*#
I've only slipped up a few times this week and vow to continue my quest for a swear-free speech. DD #2 approves of this and will help hold me accountable. Seems like the opportunity to swear is most common when trying to make a point, discussing politics or telling a joke! It's good to know the trigger points so I can be prepared to avoid the penchant for a good *!&*#.

13-*!&*#
Starting today
Time to ELIMINATE all the *!&*# from my vocabulary. Can pure water and salt water come from the same spring? I DON'T THINK SO...

Words of affirmation
Well, it was a good idea but I failed miserably at this one! I am just too critical. I'll keep working on it and add "ask forgiveness" when I fail to the weekly task! I think the best part of these exercises is that it has raised my consciousness about the flaws in my life that need fixing!

12-Words of affirmation
Work camp taught me a lot of valuable lessons but none more valuable than the power of speaking words of affirmation or holding my tongue. Words can empower an individual to achieve more than they are normally capable of or they can quench the spirit. This weeks challenge will be to speak words of affirmation instead of condemnation, to be an encourager instead of a discourager, to hold my tongue, tighten the lips and visualize a rewind button when tempted to speak words that have the potential to tear down instead of build up.

Worship through Service-AGAPE
AGAPE--a Greek word which translates in to English as LOVE. Many have thought that this word represents divine, unconditional, self-sacrificing, active, volitional, and thoughtful love.
I love to give gifts of AGAPE and frequently do so while work camping. Select candy or small gifts and pair them with a appropriate bible verse (print on card stock and attach)
Here are a couple of my ideas...feel free to use them yourself when you have a chance
Bookmarks, silly bandz, beaded bracelets, foam shapes are well received and are inexpensive "gifts"
PEANUT M&M-Jesus is NUTS about you and SO am I
SMARTIES-paired with a Proverb on WISDOM
CRUNCH BAR-pair with a bible verse to "Call on Jesus, he cares for you"
Bubble Gum-"don't blow it" paired with a Proverb on holding your tongue
BUTTERFINGERS-pair with bible verse to suggest working carefully
SUNSCREEN-Let the SON in...
CANDY HEARTS-Love Verses
Joshua 4:6 rocks (read chapter)Select a smooth stone and write Joshua 4:6 on the stone. tell the story and pass out the rocks as a keepsake
TEENIE BEANIE BABIES
-Birds, a little birdie told me you're special
-Dinosaur, You're Dino-MYTE!
-Fish, Nothing Fishy about it, you're special
-Squirrel, I'm NUTS about you
-Bears or Bunnies,I love you BEARY much, BUNNY Much
For graduating seniors I decorate pillow cases with their name, a bible verse (Jeremiah 29:11 is a good one) and have other campers sign them (use permanent markers in assorted colors)
I am hand made cards, decorated with stamps and stickers and colored markers to use as Caring Cards for each camper. These will be available to every girl in our room. I am also taking a basket of "personal care" items (soap, shampoo, etc.) in case anyone forgot something

11-Worship through Service
I haven't had the chance to post much in the last week because I have been on Middle School Work Camp with the youth of St John United Methodist Church in Prospect, KY and will be attending High School Work Camp next week in Brighton, Tennessee.
Interestingly, I have read that in the Greek the word for Worship is the same word as for service and this is what I experienced last week working alongside the middle schoolers. What if we approached each and every task as an act of worship? How different would we perform, how different might the outcome be?
While pulling out a bed of dead ivy in front of our youth room we noticed how intertwined the root system was. Years of growth made it nearly impossible to pull out the brush. The Christian life should be like the ivy...Growing among other believers, we should bind ourselves together in the study of the word, in acts of worship, service and fellowship. Over the years we grow strong and our faith cannot be easily shaken and we cannot be ripped apart by temptation, the stress of daily living, by illness, loss or anything the evil one throws at us. The middle school campers learned that last week... am we as smart as a middle school work camper? I pray that it is so...

Integrity
I have a conscience and it speaks to me loud and clear on a regular basis. It is why I drive the speed limit, do not turn on to Lime Kiln Lane from the shoulder, tell servers when I have been under (and over) charged, return incorrect change, do not tell lies and pay attention to what I watch on TV, read and say.
But, I have the urge to practice selective integrity at times too. If I justify using a stamp the company has paid for to mail my personal letters, make long distance calls from the work line or surf the Internet when I am supposed to be working...what differentiates me from an embezzler, thief or robber. Morality has changed over time and I can be influenced to think those activities are OK or that I deserve them because of some real or imagined slight at work (I don't get paid what I am worth, so-and-so has this or that perk, etc.). BUT...that is a false morality and to call myself a Christian and practice that level of immorality is a lie to myself.

10-Integrity
I had intended for this week's challenge to be on a different topic but reality has stepped up and slapped me in the face. I have been accused and I (pray) I am guilty as charged!
I have recently been accused of being too honest(Is there such a thing?). Accused, like it was a bad thing!
I am not talking about the kind of honesty that is a result of telling a person who could stand to lose a few lbs that they are fat, or that dress you're wearing really does make your butt look big...NOT that kind of "too honest". But the kind of honesty we all (should) aspire to-the return the change when the cashier makes a mistake in your favor honesty, the admitting you were speeding when being stopped by an office of the law honesty or the telling the auditor the truth honesty! Honesty that matters, integrity, character!
Never in my life have I had my integrity labeled as a liability and I am shocked, saddened and a bit angry. I'll use that "righteous indignation" to examine all aspect of integrity in my life this week.

Generosity
It was great fun being generous. Thankfully, being frugal for 12 months allowed me to say yes to any and all reasonable requests while we were on our little trip. Being generous is a lot more fun than pinching pennies. I am a penny pincher by nature...so this was a good departure for me. I suggest you SAVE UP then go HOG WILD! It's a blast (for all involved)! Just ask the kids...!

9-Generosity
Manicures and Pedicures $150
Ice cream at Ben and Jerry's: $20
Reservations at the Inn at Christmas Place: $433
Outlet mall shipping: ???
Notice I scheduled my opportunity to practice generosity when we were already slated to spend money at our annual trek to Pigeon Forge and the outlet malls. The girls have been saving their money and I plan to supplement it by giving them each a wad of cold hard cash and then allowing them to make additional (Back-to-school) purchases on me! We'll visit the Titanic exhibit, eat Ben and Jerry's (the most expensive ice-cream on the planet), lounge at the pool and eat out for 3 days and nights. Trying to extend the SAYING YES to also parting with my hard earned money!

What I've learned so far--52 minus 8 weeks
It's hard to believe that 8 weeks have already passed in my quest to a better Diana. The days are long but the years are short. Time Flies.
"All good is gained by those whose thought and life are kept pointed close to one main thing, not scattered abroad upon a thousand"--Stephen McKenna
These past 8 weeks have kept me focused in thought and deed. And, while I am focusing on a different task weekly, I am ONLY focusing on ONE thing each week. Success comes from FOCUS.
8 weekly challenges have met with varying degrees of success:
1-The Power to Choose
I feel as if I have been set free. Choosing not to embrace a negative emotion has greatly impacted my happiness. I continue to practice this daily and my mantra has become "Let it go".
2-Blessing
Recognizing the blessings that surround me has been, well, a blessing! I am surrounded by good things, great and small, and will continue to notice them in a more deliberate way. It really is the little things that matter!
3-Listen Up
I need continued work in this area but am more aware when I drift away or am not focused on verbal conversations. I am trying to appreciate silence more too.
4-Excesses
Still practicing excess but more aware of the opportunities to indulge and trying to steer clear of them. Some days and situations (like scrap booking and yarn stores) make it easier than others. Tithing and savings first out of a paycheck are now a common occurrence.
5-A Week without Whine
Still going without wine on many days and sleeping better as a result of it. And, while I am not an expert, I believe I am whining less too. Working on both of these on a daily basis. Awareness is a good thing.
6-More Strokes, less Pokes.
I think I am hardwired to be a poker...I am going to visit this in a more deliberate way in future weeks by incorporating things like compliments, holding my tongue and giving hugs.
7-One Less Thing
Successfully doing inconsequential things more efficiently and on occasional days experience less stress as a result. I have to break a 52 year cycle of being an over achiever and multi-tasker. Needs continued work.
8-Say Yes
My rigid nature makes this one a challenge but I am working on saying yes when it doesn't impact life altering events.
I believe the last 8 weeks have been a positive experience and I am a better person for it. It has given me a self awareness that I would not have had otherwise. Setting small goals on a weekly basis has enabled me to make necessary adjustments and keep my commitment to the task at hand.
Week 1 (Power to Choose) has impacted my life (and probably the lives of countless others) the most significantly.
Next on the agenda
Generosity, Eliminate self depreciating remarks, Embrace Fun and Worship through service!

Saying Yes-Thursday
I haven't had much of an opportunity to say yes because there haven't been many requests
DD asked again for ice-cream at the Dairy Queen after dinner Tuesday night (but it was too late so had to say no) and asked for Chinese takeout last night (again, too late and had to say no)
I am more open to saying yes t the things that are not dangerous, illegal/illicit or interfere with my bedtime (ha)

Saying Yes-Tuesday
Saying yes was a little easier because I had made the commitment to it. It is a little inconvenient at times...but it feels good. I said yes to a sleepover, ice cream after dinner and manicures and pedicures. Can't wait to see what opportunities the rest of the week offers.

8-Saying Yes
I live a fairly regimented life and it works because we have many obligations which requires good planning and adhering to a schedule. This sometimes leaves little room for spontaneity. So, since school will be out as of Tuesday I am going to say YES more often!
More opportunities to get ice cream, have a friend over, paint a t-shirt or bake cupcakes. More hugs, more laughter, more love.
Does the house really have to be cleaned TODAY or can it wait until another day? Can I say yes instead of no?
As I was writing the above statements, DD asked if I could drop her off at the local mall (she had asked for a friend to come over and I was up for that). I didn't want to drive her to the mall, she wasn't even dressed, I was recovering from a wicked migraine. I was VERY tempted to say no...but I said yes.
This is going to be a hard one too!

One Less Thing Friday
Doing one less thing involves doing the same thing in "bulk". Like bringing an entire week's worth of yogurt and keeping it in the fridge at work so I don't have to remember every day...and bringing a large box of granola instead of individual daily servings. Seems simple but it made the mornings easier this week! Why hadn't I thought of that earlier?
I have applied this to a variety of issues
1) Birthday cards: June's birthday cards are purchased, signed, addressed all at the same time. The date they need to be mailed is written where I will place the stamp. No more late birthday cards. No more multiple trips out to purchase a card. Time saved!
2) Staples shopping: buy as many rolls of TP, paper towels, storage bags, etc. as I will use in the next month and not have check inventory or make the grocery list for those items for another 4 weeks. Can be expanded for any staples like pasta, canned goods, etc.
3) Bring 3 lunches to work on Monday and store in freezer (I use frozen dinners most days). And I an bringing only 3 to leave room for a day of "fresh" leftovers.
4) Errands will be run in one morning this weekend...so the rest of the time can be spent relaxing! Less time and gasoline used.
5) We'll smoke ribs, a chicken and some salmon for multiple meals. The chicken will be pulled for use in enchiladas and quesidillas and the salmon will be shrink-vacuumed for storage! YUM, double YUM!
Happy Memorial day!

One Less Thing Thursday
Doing one less thing isn't about doing less. It is about properly budgeting your time to do the more important things (today's task in NOT one of life's MORE important things...but it still needs to be done! ) Doing one less thing is about reducing the stress in your life, increasing the quality of your life in small increments and creating a life that runs smoothly.
So, this morning while I was waiting for DD to finish getting ready for school, I used that time to iron a few t-shirts of mine (DH irons ALL his own clothes and occasionally the kids t-shirts! Am I blessed or what?). I despise ironing and will wear the last item in my closet before I get to the ironing.
The ironing board was already set up...so it was not a major effort on my part to begin. I selected a few items that were easy to iron in the time I had available. Continuing with the theme of touching things only once, when I completed the ironing, I walked the items upstairs and VIOLA! 10 freshly pressed shirts hanging in my closet. Tonight I will get the coordinating shorts, slacks and skirts so I will have COMPLETE outfits.
It feels good to accomplish a task (or a small part of a larger task) and still not feel rushed or stressed.
What I know:
1) Tasks that need to be completed can cause stress when they remain undone
2) To reduce the impact of unfinished tasks, put them out of sight (The ironing is hanging in a closet with the door closed)
3) Evaluate the small chunks of time you have throughout your day and fit the least desirable tasks into those small slots of time (break large tasks into smaller manageable ones, like setting up the ironing board and iron, hauling out the DI water and starch so WHEN I have the time to iron, I can actually iron)
4) Will yourself to begin. Sometimes starting is the hardest part
5) Set a timer if you need it and stop when you have completed the task you set out to do
6) Complete a coordinating event next (iron the shorts so I have complete outfits)
A completed task is a reward in itself! Congratulations!
While ironing is not a life altering event if it doesn't get completed, I can see a correlation between avoiding it and other more serious tasks. Leaving things un-done can cause your household, your relationships, job and life to become derailed and fall into dis-array. I don't advocate avoiding the unpleasant, as leaving things undone can create larger, more expensive problems in the long run. Breaking tasks down into manageable parts can increase your motivation to "gettin 'er done".
What is the MORE important thing you need to get done today?

One Less Thing Wednesday
I am reading e-mails about 3-5 times a day at work and not at all on the weekends or evenings. This is a great time saver. My focus has been on "touching the e-mail only once"-not always possible but I am working on it. I read and then file, take action or delete e-mails when they populate my inbox. It really works at reducing my stress and is a time saver as well.
Refraining from printing an important e-mails and filing them electronically to cut down on both paper waste and the filing chore. I HATE filing. When I die, if there is filing in the afterlife, I know I didn't make it to heaven (but that is not even a possiblity since I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior!)

One Less Thing Tuesday
One less thing today involves touching items only once. When I come in contact with something, I am going to ACT on it and complete the task at hand. Filing will get done today and forms will be filled out instead of being placed in another stack to address at a later time. I anticipate a productive day.

One Less Thing Monday
Not sure if this morning qualifies but I dried a load of Laundry and cleaned the bathroom counters and mirror, took chicken out for dinner and wrote a blog entry before I left for work. I didn't leave anything un-done but didn't feel rushed. No written list today, no planner and will prob not look in the briefcase as I have a meeting most of the day.
I am planning on a relaxing dinner, a walk and then will work on a baby prayer shawl while watching "Dancing with the Stars"

7-One less thing
I've never had a problem with procrastination, getting multiple tasks done, organizational skills and the like. In fact, it is quite the opposite. I am somewhat of a boyscout, always prepared for any contingency. I create list of all sorts: grocery lists, lists of books to read, lists of household chores to be performed, ideas for future craft projects, devotions that need to be written, even what I have cooked for dinner. I keep a color coded, detailed family calendar (2 actually)to keep us on track. I am prepared in advance for most needs (I am never one to run to the grocery store at the first threat of snow because I have the 36 rolls of toilet paper in the closet). My pantry and freezer is well stocked. I have craft supplies for any unexpected school project. My gas tank never gets below 1/4 a tank, etc., etc., etc.
Today I carried a purse, a briefcase, my Franklin-Covey Planner and my knitting bag into work with me. Those items probably totaled about 20 extra pounds of stuff. I felt overwhelmed before I even hit my office, thinking of all the incomplete tasks those books, binders and files held. Something's gotta give!
If I am always SO prepared, why do I feel stressed? Something's gotta give...and I have come to the conclusion that all my lists and the desire to be productive is wearing me thin. All the opportunities, incomplete tasks, un-read books, are a burden I am carrying each day. Therefore, I have decided to DO ONE LESS THING this week. I will leave any unnecessary item at home (out of sight), I will leave a load of laundry un-done before I go to work. I will NOT carry the book with 3 pages left to be read in the chapter to work with me and plan to finish it at lunch. I will (try) not to use my lists as a way of controlling life.
Life is what happens while I am busy making lists, squeezing one more task into an already FULL, productive day. This week I will RELAX (it is a check off item on my daily to do list, REALLY!--so I will leave it OFF my to do list), I will LAUGH more, I will HUG more, I will make a conscious effort to "WASTE" time, by not filling every waking moment with a task that needs to be completed.
My mantra will be "ONE less thing"!

Oh to be an oyster
Oysters create pearls because a small irritant gets against the flesh of the tender oyster. In order to protect itself the oyster lays down a coating over the grain of sand and over time produces a beautiful pearl.
Oh, to be an oyster this week. I have already failed miserably in keeping my sarcastic retorts to myself and I have only been at it for 24 hours!
Oh, to be an oyster...Wouldn't it be a blessing to lay down a beautiful barrier between me and the irritant so...that instead of caustic word, a bitter sigh, haughtily raised eyebrows, disapproving frowns or a disdainful looks those around me only saw a pearl?
Oh, to be an oyster! Help me create pearls this week.

6-More Strokes and Less Pokes
I'm grouchy this morning. NO good reason I just am. I want to give into it and "enjoy" it, if you know what I mean. However, that would no be keeping in line with my desire to be come a better Diana...so I am going to have to swim up stream and GET OVER IT!
This week, I am going to try to live the old adage "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". I may explode before the day is over!
Pray for me! I am going to give more STROKES than POKES and appreciate the effort given by my children, husband, drivers on the road, friends and co-workers.

Doing Right
For some reason yesterday a lovely bottle of Autumn Red, sitting open on the counter, was calling my name (LOUDLY and REPEATEDLY)! I so BADLY wanted to pour a glass and enjoy it on the deck. I seriously thought about breaking my covenant to be wine free for a week or more. Interestingly enough, the more I thought about my W3 (Week without Wine, the more I rationalized it and the more I wanted a glass. SO...I changed my way of thinking. I reminded myself that I made the choice to go a Week Without Whine for good reasons and I could go without a glass for TODAY. Eventually the longings left me but the desire to savor a glass were the strongest Thursday than they have been the entire week.
What worked for me was knowing that reminding myself that:
1) No one else cares if I break the W3 pledge
2) I could have a glass of wine if I wanted to (I am in control)
3) I could change the loop that was in my head and NOT think about wine
4) Choosing to keep a commitment is easier if you only do it one day at a time
I plan on extending W3 until Thursday of next week when we enjoy our Seven Deadly Zins party. I've been sleeping better and I must give credit to the wine free week! That and the decreased caloric intake make it all the more with while!

Excuses in Whine
Well, I didn't get to the gym yesterday because of torrential rains! Yes, I own an umbrella but it was just too nasty out to make the 3 block walk. Maybe today...IF a meeting doesn't interfere. Or a walk after dinner (that is the most likely scenario. Pitiful
Sleeping better, just not long enough last night...and no wine with dinner. No wine has been much easier than I anticipated, thank goodness! Didn't even think about a glass of wine until I was telling my knitting group about my abstinence! But, I am dragging today...need an extra jolt of caffeine, I guess.

Fruits
In keeping with the wine theme, I am memorizing Galatians 5:22-26 (the Fruits of the Spirit verses)
I'll practice self control today (feel free to choose your own fruit from the list...
LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS and SELF-CONTROL...against such things there is no law.
I ran a half mile last night before track practice(my last of the season. I haven't run since October...and missed Butt and Gutt class for a pork chile relleno (yum-a-licious). Yoga today, IF I can practice self control and get myself to the gym between the raindrops!
Thought about wine at 4:30pm yesterday and then again abut 9pm (thinking that I hadn't thought about it!)

4:46pm
Well, I was on the way home yesterday and looked at the clock when I had the first though about a glass of wine. It was 4:46pm and I was just leaving the grocery store. I had 2 more thoughts over the course of the evening.
Developed an ocular migraine at the Booster Club meeting and took my medicine...
Closed my eyes at about 10:15pm but slept well until the garbage man woke me up at about 5am.
Didn't go to they gym yesterday but it is on my radar for today
Paraphrased (Jeanine O'Conner)
Over time, women gain wight because we accumulate so much wisdom and information in our heads that there is no room to store it all so it is redistributed to the rest of our bodies. From now on, when I look at my butt I am going to think "Look how smart I am!"
Well, I made a decision to go and eat lunch with work buddies (el Mundo) instead of attending Butt and Gutt! It was a butt and gutt decision of a different kind!

Whine
Sunday: Well, I did it...I didn't have any wine with my mothers day meal (and a good red would have complimented the tenderloin filet and grilled asparagus DH prepared). I opened a bottle and poured my dad a glass, let my mom consume the last glass of a nice chard and drank water. Sadly...I did not sleep any better...but did fall back to sleep a bit easier.
I didn't fare well with giving up WHINE...as I was complaining (rather loudly with the slamming of pots and pans) that everyone in the house was relaxing except the MOM on Mothers day as I cleaned up the kitchen and did laundry. Grrr. Disappointed in myself.
Monday: I have already eaten my breakfast, taken my vitamins and planned a healthy dinner for tonight. Can I get in my group exercise calss or will WORK get in the way? Wallpaper is finally being hung today and there ids a booster club meeting tonight. Another Manic Monday!

5-A Week without Whine
Well, I am about to go cold turkey and begin a week without wine or whine. It is all about fitness this week!
I already consider myself fairly healthy, I floss (yes, I am kind of addicted to it) take my vitamins, calcium and 81 mg of aspirin, do not smoke and get around 8 hours of sleep nightly and some exercise. However, at age 52 I realize I need to be more deliberate so...
Beginning this week I am going to add back my group exercise classes at clock tower and add a walk or run to my weekly regimen (I really liked being a runner who didn't start running util she was 48...so I had better start that up again!). To top it off, I am giving up wine for a week to see if that helps decrease my insomnia (I really like a nice or even cheap glass of wine while I am preparing dinner). I am secretly hoping that the hypothesis of wine consumptin contributes to sleepless-ness is unfounded! Haha!
Assuming giving up wine and having my daughter home from college for the first time will increase my propensity to WHINE...I am going back to the first week and will attempt to give up both wine and whine at the same time!

Doing more with less
I've cleaned out my basement and pantry this week. NOw it's time to clean out my head and clear the calendar!
I am a multi-tasker who has a hard time sitting and doing nothing. I am pretty organized and get a lot done in the time allotted but...I find myself making lists in my head if I wake up in the middle of the night. I am unable to sit and watch television without a book or knitting project in my had (or a basket of unfolded laundry)> I am the GIRL who DOES too much!
So, today's challenge is to do ONE LESS thing.
I will RELAX. Perhaps, I will simply sit and enjoy the sunshine
I will leave one thing undone (perhaps a small chore that I would otherwise cram in before I rush out of the house)
I will refuse to make a list in my head during the night of how I am going to organize my day tomorrow.
I will NOT plan to attend stamping class on the only free evening I have next week!
See a more relaxed me next week when I take on a "Week witout WHINE" (Giving up and geting back on my fitness regimine)

Avoiding aquisition
I never really noticed just how many e-mails I get from stores. Many of these have detailed sales information (Lowest prices of the season!, seriously, every week???) and "valuable" coupons attached.
I have begun to delete these e-mails without even looking at them. Likewise with the sales flyer's in the newspapers. They really are just a temptation for me to acquire some unnecessary goods or services. And an added bonus is the time I save not reading those e-mails!

Unloading Excess 2
Part of unloading must begin with not accumulating.
I find that I have a loop that runs through my head of things to accumulate. I am practicing NOT making a purchase (didn't go to Hobby Lobby or Dollar tree even though I was in close proximity and would have usually stopped in just to browse, which usually ends up with some unnecessary purchase). This is a good habit to cultivate.
I have a full pantry and find it extremely hard NOT to make staple purchases when they are on sale and I also have coupons. Is it better to buy 4 totaling $4 or wait and buy 1 when I need it and pay $2.50 (or if I had a viable coupon it would only be $1.50, but can't count on that). Logic tells me that paying $1 each is the better plan...but rethinking this. Your feedback might just tip the scale on this one!
Didn't make it to consignment yesterday so shooting for today.

Unloading Excess
I have a real hard time getting rid of stuff that
1) I like
2) Was expensive (like clothing) but no longer fit, are out of style or are uncomfortable
3) Might be able to be used in the future, even broken stuff that could be used in craft projects, for example
4) Gifts, what will the giver think
5) Is used only occasionally like SILVER serving pieces, kitchen appliances and gadgets. What if I need it as soon as I donate it??? I might really need to zest a lemon in the near future!
Therefore, my home is crowded with STUFF that is taking up space and, as my friend Lynn pointed out requires me to clean it, store it or look at it (and feel guilty about having it). SO, I am on a mission to divest myself of some of it.
First thing I did was go through the kids clothes in the basement that I was saving for our church consignment sale. I loaded it into the car and took it to the shop where they accepted about 5 pieces and gave me $12.71 for my troubles. I am taking the remaining items to another 2 stores today. What doesn't "sell" there will be consigned at church (in October) and marked DONATE...so it doesn't come back into my house. This requires a lot less work since I don't have to go back and pick it up at the end of the sale, saving me time as well!
Next step is to find an adult consignment store which will accept my items. What they don't accept will have to go to Goodwill or something. Honestly, do I think I will wear those Linda Evans jackets with shoulder pads in this lifetime again? The hardest part of this will be taking the time to find a store and DOING IT. I have a phobia about going to new places like this...
I plan on using up what is in my pantry and freezer
I plan on using up my craft supplies before buying any additional (scrap booking, card stamping and knitting/crochet projects, fabric)..this will be hard!
I plan on making a list of what I want/need to buy and not purchasing items that are not on the list
I plan on keeping track of purchases and shopping impulses (what is my motivation, emotion and money spent)
I plan on re-purposing items
I plan on organizing my stuff better so I can find what I need instead of purchasing new.

4-Excesses
49 pairs of shoes including winter boots, flip-flops in 6 colors, dress shoes and running shoes. And I am shopping for another pair...
I have arranged by shirts/blouses by color.
I have so many things. Thing require them to be washed, ironed, dusted, put away, stored...I have a penchant for accumulating more things and I truly do love a good sale and the Dollar Store! This week I will make a concerted effort to
1) Use up (as in food in the pantry, shampoos, craft items, fabric) before purchasing more
2) Consign what is just taking up space (and probably save the money to buy more stuff!)
3) Donate that which consignment will not take .
This will be the hardest part of this week because I always think the clothing will come back into style, it is too good to just "get rid of" or I will lose 4 pounds and it will fit again. I can't figure out why it's so hard for me to party with items that I haven't worn in a year.
I have started taking the stuff to the basement and IF I change my mind it is there for a period of time (and I have occasionally rescued a few blouses and a slip!) Who wears slips now a days...

Lessons learned
I have learned that you cannot start a post, save it and have it post on the date you publish it. It posts out of "order" on the date you created it!. I guess thisd will mean daily blog posts...

I'm a REAL Blogger now!
I guess I am real not that I have advertisements on my blog...But, for them to work, I have to have followers who read the Blog AND CLick on the ads...hmmmm. How do others "entice people to read your blogs? Seems very self serving to me to promote an interest in the mundane workings of my life.

Well, I had a bad day
I failed miserably at avoiding the negative over the weekend. I was just plain cranky and found fault with everything from Gary's driving to the cleanliness of Alayna's room. Remembering to choose is useful but choosing correctly is just plain hard sometimes. I think I was infected with "it's all about me syndrome" this weekend. Definably stole my joy (and the rest of my families as well!)

2-Blessings
Intellectually, I know I have it good . This week I am going to record my many blessings and that which I am thankful for. I am going to make an EXTREME effort to say thanks, give credit where credit is due and generally appreciate what I have! I am going to practice the "Glass is half-full" theory. Will I feel more blessed by the end of the week and will I appreciate the people who love me and the things I have to a greater degree?
Sunday
Reading the Sunday paper in bed before church, coffee in hand, Maggie and Alayna close by
Welcome back Kotter videos with the kids, their laughter
The many bible translations in my home
The ability to worship freely and without fear
Monday
Husband Gary always greets me with "I love you" and a kiss upon waking (incidentally, he does this every day)
I get to "sleep" a few minutes longer while DH takes his shower first (5:30am)
Warm showers
DH brings me my coffee every morning. Coffee in the morning
DH Makes the bed, a chore I despise!

3-LISTEN up!
I can be poor at listening when I am doing other things that require my attention or if you interrupt me in the middle of, say writing an e-mail to tell me something, when your story is long winded and when it isn't about me (ouch, that one hurts to write).
I have a couple of goals in mind with this week's challenge
1) Shut up and listen
2)To engage all my senses (eyes, ears, brain) when you are talking (particularly, my younger daughter)
3) To STOP what I am doing (even when it's important) and give you my full attention (because you're even more important)
4) Allow you to finish your story without injecting a similar one of my own
5) Ask questions and remember details
6) Remember a new acquaintances name when I meet them a second time
Well, I had an opportunity to listen to Alayna, remember a name (Karen) and to not inject my own stories. I did OK-need to do better. Had to remember a 2nd name (Mary) and still remember it today! WOW! That has to be a record. Praying I remember her face when I see her next so I can impress her with my memorization skills (since we discussed how bad we are at remembering names!)
It is harder to listen than I realized. I now find myself thinking about my need to listen instead of the comment I am going to make, which is just another form of distraction. How to break the cycle?

I also find myself offering advice (especially to my kids) instead of just listening to them. Sometimes all they want is to tell their story, concern or incident. The telling is the therapeutic part. I also find that I multi-task (type e-mail responses, etc.) when talking on the phone to Gary or Kara, for example. Very eye opening, as I can't fully concentrate on either "conversation".
I have learned that I can remember peoples names (Frances from a Derby Party! and her daughters, Madison, Ellery and oops-can't remember the oldest one) if I concentrate and apply the tried and true tools of repeating their names in the conversation, asking questions and association.
1-The POWER to CHOOSE
I don't consider myself an optimist. I tend to analyze peoples motivations, actions and words from a negative perspective. I ponder slights and hurts for far too long. All of this impacts my capacity for JOY each and every moment of each and every day. I want to change that. Life is finite and once a minute, an hour, a day is spent it is irretrievable. Therefore, I must CHOOSE to see the good (or overlook the negative), I must CHOOSE to overlook a slight. I need a change in perspective.
I know this is going to be hard for me...
On Tuesday morning my boss sprang an unplanned meeting on me. We were having out of town guests and needed to extend our meeting room reservation and have lunch delivered. This was at 9:20am. He wouldn't know a lunch headcount until later that morning and wanted Delivery from a local deli that was usually less than cooperative with deliveries and late orders (and I was heading out to another meeting). I CHOOSE to just ACCEPT these circumstances. I didn't focus on the lack of planning, the inconvenience this created for me or the insensitivity of my boss. Just making that choice was so freeing. I didn't stew about it and lose precious minutes in justifiable indignation. I was astounded that simply making the CHOICE to ACCEPT the situation had such a profound outlook on my entire attitude and the rest of my day. The success of this certainly made me look forward to the next "opportunity" to exercise my POWER to CHOOSE.
As you can imagine, it didn't take long for the next opportunity to present itself. The very next morning as I was driving to work, traffic began to back up doe to slow moving road machinery. I get resentful when drivers don't practice proper driving etiquette, are just plain rude or put their need for speed above my safety. As drivers pulled out from behind only to swerve back in 2 cars ahead of me I sped up to close the gap to prevent other like minded drivers from doing the same. Then I remembered my POWER to CHOOSE resolution, felt chagrined and vowed to refrain from such practices in the future. Could that choice impact my overall outlook and increase my daily JOY?
At home that same evening I was talking about Track practice with my husband, Gary (I help coach the field events of Javelin, Discus and Shot-put for middle school-ers). This particular evening several of the team members were less than motivated to practice. They literally dragged their feet and laid on the field, had to make numerous restroom breaks, refused to sprint and were generally uncooperative. I would have normally complained and maligned the kids for their behavior, sucking the JOY out of the few minutes a husband and wife had together preparing dinner. I chose to make the comments short but factual. Again, I was amazed at how framing my comments away from the negative impacted my attitude.
Wednesday morning I was reading Rick Warrens "A Purpose Drive Life" of a small group I facilitate. 2 phrases from the daily reading really jumped off the page and spoke to me.
The first "Nothing is arbitrary...it is all for a purpose" made me consider that my reaction to everything should also be for a purpose.
The second "The essence of God's character is love" ignited a desire that I would like my essence to be love. No one was ever going to accuse me of that so this one is going to be REAL hard to incorporate into my character...Difficult, but worth it!
Petty annoyances plague my days but having implemented the power to CHOOSE not to be annoyed by this has been very liberating. I am surrounded by poor drivers, rude people, insensitive boors but I have to accept that as a member of the human race. I am adopting the attitude that people are doing the best they can and not let their bad behaviors (by MY standards) ruin the moments. I also read that when you complain about people, the listener assigns the attribute you are talking about to the teller...so all the more reason NOT to complain. It appears that the old adage, you are what you think is true. I have felt less stressed this week because I employed the CHOICE to let it go.
Those things that cause me the most stress are things that are really not worth it. Why should I allow an inconsiderate driver or store clerk, things tasking longer than they should, traffic, people calling me DIANE (not DianA) to rob me of ANY joy? I have to repeatedly remind myself that these people mean me no real harm, they don't know any better or they are in a hurry (insert any excuse that allows me to move beyond the moment). This realization has added peaceful moments to my week. I think CHOOSING to over look a negative is a keeper!

Introduction to my 52 weeks
Change and growth take place when a person has risked himself and dares to become involved with experimenting with his own life--Herbert Otto
Having decided that I want to be "different" 52 weeks from now I am embracing what I fear will be the MOST difficult of lifestyle changes I have ever resolved to make. I am making a list of the self improvements I hope to accomplish over the course of a year. I expect this list to expand as the week progress but for now we will begin with one lofty goal in mind: To create a life that will outlive me by bringing joy to those I encounter on a daily basis. For those who know me, this is not going to be an easy task to accomplish as I tend to analyze situations too intensely and focus on the negative (implied or imagined).
Always a list maker, this blog will serve as a high-tech way to keep me accountable! Wish me luck! and perhaps you'll consider joining me on this journey with your own 52 weeks list!
